From Aguas Calientes we take a 25 minutes bus to the famous Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu, also known as "The Lost City of the Incas", discovered for science in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham.

We tour the ruins for around 2 hours, during which time our guide explains the astounding degree of technology achieved by the builders of this famous site. The tight construction, the water channels, the staircases carved from the living rock of the mountain, and the Intihuatana, (or "Hitching Post of the Sun"), which served as an astronomical calendar, all show technological advancement far beyond anything this area of the world was thought to have achieved. These, along with the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Tomb, the Priests' House, the Inca Baths and the Temple of the Three Windows, all allow us to glimpse back into the past and, with the help of our guide, revisit the lives of these truly remarkable people.

Questions

Climate: During the May-September dry season the weather is geneally sunny. With spells of overcast or showers. From October to April the weather is far more variable, with a tendency to sunshine in the morning with rain later. January and February are the wettest months. The Andean seasonal variation seems to have become less reliable in recent years, and the weather less predictable. In recent times the problem of grass and forest fires in the Andes and Amazon has become acute, often leading to very smoky skies in August and September.

Altitude Note : At high elevation air preasure is lower. Each lungful of air captures fewer oxygen molecules. It is definitely worth restraining one`s enthusiasm for the first couple of hours when arriving by plane from Lima. Relax, lie down, adjust. Evoid respiratory depressants, such as alcohol, sedatives and sleeping pills. ( For better sleep, take Acetazolamide ( Diamox) instead ) Eat lightly for a day or so. Dehydration occurs very rapidly at high altitude, thus it is vital to drink plenty of fluids. All this will speed acclimatization. In a day you will feel better, and in two days you should be fine.

Hypoxia or AMS ( Acute Mountain Sickness), know locally as soroche, can be hard to shake off once it starts. Symptoms are shortness of breath, headache, nausea, dizziness, insomnia, loss of appetite, vomiting in bad cases. Descent in the infallible cure for altitude problems. The local remedy is tea made from coca leaves ( mate de coca ) This is helpful, but by no means a cure. Acetazolamide ( Diamox ) This drug has shown good results as prophylaxis and treatment of AMS ( soroche o mal de altura ) It is a prescription drug used in the treatment of glaucoma, and as a diuretic. It acts as a respiratory stimulant, and also counteracts the blood alkalosis associated with AMS. Taking the drug at night before sleep is particularly helpful. Most people experience a slight tingling in their extremities as a side effect, some feel drowsy, and a few have more serious adverse reactions. It is a sulfa drug, and the usual precautions apply.

Dexamethasone is an alternative for the sulfa-intolerant. Consult a physician. Acetazolamide ( Diamox ) is now usually taken for two or three days to prevent AMS ( soroche ), beginning the day before your journey to high altitude ( 125-250 mg twice a day, or one 500 mg sustained release capsule per 24 hours ) It is available over the counter at Peruvian pharmacies. To set off for the Inca Trail the day you fly into Cusco from sea level is asking for trouble. SAS`s clients are proffesionally assisted by the expert Dr Oscar Tejada`s expertise in Cusco. ( Source: High Altitude Medicine, P.H. Hackett ,R.C Roach & Peter Frost, Exploring Cusco`s guide book )

Note: Please remember more visitors to Cusco and other cities got slightly sick not for the AMS ( soroche o mal de altura ) rather than the infamous Turista stomach problems, the diarrhea.

Diarrhoea:  To prevent diarrhea, avoid tap water unless it has been boiled, filtered, or chemically disinfected (eg with iodine tablets); only eat fresh fruits and vegetables if cooked or peeled; be wary of dairy products that might contain unpasteurized milk, and be highly selective when eating food from street vendors.

If you develop diarrhea, be sure to drink plenty of fluids, preferably an oral re-hydration solution containing lots of salt and sugar. A few loose stools don't require treatment but, if you start experiencing more than four or five stools a day, you should start taking an antibiotic (usually a quinolone drug) and an antidiarrheal agent (such as loperamide).

If diarrhea is bloody, or persists for more than 72 hours, or is accompanied by fever, shaking chills or severe abdominal pain you should seek medical attention.
